Understanding what Narcan is and how it works can empower individuals to save lives and combat the devastating effects of opioid overdoses.
What Is Narcan?
Narcan, also known by its generic name naloxone, is a medication specifically designed to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses. It works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain, quickly displacing the opioids and restoring normal breathing. Narcan is non-addictive, safe, and easy to use, making it an essential tool in overdose prevention.
Narcan is available in two forms:
- Nasal Spray: The most common form, which can be administered without medical training.
- Injectable Solution: Typically used by healthcare professionals in clinical settings.
How Does Narcan Work?
When someone experiences an opioid overdose, their breathing may slow or stop, which can lead to brain damage or death within minutes. Narcan acts as an opioid antagonist, meaning it blocks and reverses the effects of opioids such as:
- Heroin
- Fentanyl
- Prescription painkillers like oxycodone and hydrocodone
Once administered, Narcan can restore normal breathing within 2-3 minutes. However, its effects are temporary, so emergency medical attention is still required.
Signs of an Opioid Overdose
Recognizing the signs of an overdose is critical to responding quickly. Symptoms include:
- Slow or shallow breathing
- Unresponsiveness or unconsciousness
- Blue or gray lips and fingernails
- Pinpoint pupils
If you suspect an overdose, act immediately. Call 911 and administer Narcan if available.
How to Use Narcan
Using Narcan is simple and requires no prior medical training. Here’s how to administer the nasal spray:
- Check for Responsiveness: Shake the person gently and shout their name. If there’s no response, proceed.
- Administer Narcan: Place the nozzle of the nasal spray into one nostril and press the plunger firmly to release the medication.
- Call 911: Even if the person wakes up, they still need emergency medical care.
- Provide Support: If the person is not breathing, begin rescue breathing or CPR if trained.
- Repeat If Necessary: If there’s no response within 2-3 minutes, administer a second dose.
Where Can You Get Narcan?
Narcan is available without a prescription in many states, including Hawaii. Maui AIDS Foundation offers Narcan to individuals who may be at risk of overdose or those who want to be prepared to help others. You can also find it at participating pharmacies and through community organizations.
