Hui O Ānuenue
The Hui O Ānuenue program consists of outreach, focus groups and group activities for people 14-20 years old. MAF's Program Coordinator, Robert Clark, conducts outreach at venues frequented by youth to engage, educate and recruit from the target population. Focus groups are held to provide a safe space for youth to build community, practice communication, and discuss topics pertaining to sexual health such as HIV/STI education and testing, interpersonal communication, self-identity and healthy relationships. Group activities build trust, community and a supportive environment.
Hui O Ānuenue's design gives youth tools to make safer and informed choices, think critically, and communicate with others about their sexual health. The safe space created encourages participation in discussion topics of self-development, life skills and behavioral changes. Activities created for the group help to reinforce the trust and supportive nature of the program and aid with the cultivation and preservation of Hawaii’s culture.
Community partnerships play a critical role in the success of Empower’d. MAF collaborates with schools and youth centers throughout the county to provide services to youth. Collaborations with community organizations such as Malama I Ke Ola Health Center, Hui No Ke Ola Pono, Friends of the Children’s Justice Center and Maui Pride help to provide extended support for the youth of Maui County.
